Jim Foster

— Violin Instructor

Hello! My name is Jim Foster. I’m a violinist, guitarist, and pianist. I decided to begin my musical journey at age 7, after watching my parents play traditional Texas fiddle music and folk songs together at home. I studied music throughout my teenage years with several different private instructors, and then I went on to earn an Associates of Arts in Music Performance/Composition at Austin Community College. I’ve been an active player in the Austin music community for half of my life, performing regularly on violin and guitar in many different ensembles and in a variety of musical genres.\r\n\r\nI’ve been teaching music for over ten years, and have taught at a number of different schools- including Music & Arts, TakeLessons, and the Boys and Girls Club at Reagan High School. I approach teaching with enthusiasm and dedication! I prefer a holistic teaching method which focuses on strong technique, reading skills, improvisation, and playing student selected pieces. My greatest goal as a teacher is to instill in my students a strong understanding of music, such that they will eventually be able to teach themselves!
