Sowmya Somaneth

— Vocal Instructor

Sowmya Somanath, 25 year old musician and dancer, holds a Bachelor’s degree in music from the University of Texas at Austin. Under her mother’s guidance, she began singing at the age of two, and has studied classical music for 20 years now.\r\n\r\n \r\n\r\nSowmya possesses striking versatility as a musician. She is trained in Western classical singing (including opera and choral literature), jazz, pop, and R&B, and is also proficient in two styles of Indian classical singing – Carnatic and Hindustani. In college, Sowmya studied opera at UT with Professor Nikita Storojev and Professor Leonard Johnson. She was a member of Concert Chorale as well as Ransom Notes, a student-led a cappella singing group.\r\n\r\n \r\n\r\nThrough her career, Sowmya has won numerous singing awards. In 2008, she was the only student from her high school to be admitted to the Texas Women’s All-State Choir, ranking 2nd chair. She received the Golden Voice Award that same year from her choir director, and in 2015, Sowmya won the ‘Voice of Dallas’ award at the Dallas IndoFestival.\r\n\r\n \r\n\r\nSowmya has taught voice at Cross Timbers Middle School, Lonestar School of Music, and through her own private studio. When she isn’t teaching music and dance, she is singing/songwriting. Sowmya is currently working towards the imminent release of an indie electronic album with her good friend, Walter Nichols.\r\n\r\nNeedless to say, pursuing a life of art is something Sowmya is most grateful for. Music is a language we can all relate to, and helping each of her students find their own special connection to music is something Sowmya considers an immeasurable gift.
