Karlene Grinberg from Eastside Music School shares eight practical tips for building a sustainable vocal practice, emphasizing consistency over duration, physical awareness, and finding joy in the process.
1. Create a Routine – Short, consistent sessions of 15–20 minutes a day or several times a week are more beneficial than long, infrequent practice. Brief increments reduce vocal fatigue.
2. Warm Up Properly – Use resonance training, humming, lip trills, and breathing exercises to connect with your body before diving into full singing.
3. Focus on Full Body Alignment – Check for tension in your shoulders, neck, and spine. Aim to feel relaxed and comfortable throughout your practice.
4. Focus on Resonance and Tone Quality – Be intentional about how you produce sound — experiment with vowels, air pressure, and tone. Train your awareness the way an instrumentalist focuses on their instrument.
5. Vocal Health – Prioritize hydration and vocal rest. Avoid straining your voice in social settings, and give yourself permission to pull back when needed.
6. Mental Health and Mindfulness – Incorporate meditative practices into your routine. Take time to appreciate where you are and where you’re headed.
7. Record Yourself – Track your progress by recording exercises, phrases, and full songs. Listening back trains your ear and builds awareness of your sound in different spaces.
8. Stay Inspired – See live performances, enjoy the full process, and always find the joy. Inspiration is essential to creativity and consistency
